Retired Utility Scout for Terrain Yonder
Legacy Promotional Traversal Unit
Pre-Dusty Field Notes
Original Deployment
Rusty was the original Martian General Stores mascot, deployed during a time when enthusiasm significantly outpaced caution.
Featuring a state-of-the-art single optical sensor, multiple decorative panels, and several components whose purposes were described as "forward-looking," Rusty embodied the pioneering spirit of early Martian retail outreach.
Operational Highlights
- Vision System: one large, expressive eye, directionally committed
- Mobility Platform: confident, uninterrupted forward motion
- Situational Awareness: assumed
The Incident
Extended Vertical Exploration
During a routine promotional traversal near the scenic ridgeline of Sector 7-G, Rusty demonstrated exceptional consistency in maintaining course.
Unfortunately, the terrain did not.
- Rusty identified the horizon
- Rusty continued toward the horizon
- The horizon declined to reciprocate
At the time of the event, supervising operators were engaged in critical background tasks and were therefore unable to advise Rusty that the map had ended.
Current Status
- Location: Lower Sector, exact coordinates described as "down there"
- Condition: structurally redistributed
- Availability: pending enthusiasm and a sufficiently long ladder
Lessons Learned
- Cliff Detection Module, beta, occasionally on
- Second Opinions, pilot program
- Operator Glancing Requirements, strongly encouraged
Legacy
Rusty paved the way for future mascots, including Dusty, by demonstrating the importance of terrain verification, the limits of optimism-based navigation, and that forward momentum is not, by itself, a strategy.
